The opening day of qualifying for the 110th Indianapolis 500 has been cancelled due to inclement weather on Saturday, moving all of the grid-deciding sessions to Sunday.
Intermittent rain over Indianapolis Motor Speedway rendered running impossible on the 2.5-mile oval on Saturday, causing day one of qualifying – which traditionally sees the full 33-car field making their initial four-lap attempts – to be called off.
Instead, the entirety of qualifying will now play out exclusively on Sunday, with all 33 cars getting one attempt each to try and make the subsequent “knockout” rounds.
These will consist of a Top 12 round featuring the 12 fastest drivers from the opening attempts, and then the decisive Fast Six pole position shootout.
The field will also be given a morning practice session at 9:30 am ET to get themselves up to speed.
