Felix set the third fastest time as Honda staged a 14-car manufacturer test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course on Monday.
Part of the preparations for next month’s INDYCAR Grand Prix at the 2.439-mile track, the eight-hour test session was initially hampered by rain before the weather cleared in the afternoon.
Felix completed 93 laps to record a best time of 1m09.716s, which left him less than two tenths off Colton Herta’s pace-setting effort and just half a tenth adrift of Ganassi team-mate Scott Dixon in P2.
“It was a good test ultimately, although a bit weird in the beginning,” says Felix. “When I went out this morning, I forgot how the track is, how it turns! I had one corner where I tried to do third gear and it was actually first. Normally, I don’t do that. I actually forgot. Anyway, that was quickly overcome and in the end we managed to complete a very positive programme.”
Although the test marked Felix’s first taste of the IMS road course aboard an IndyCar, he has previous experience of the track from his partial 2016 Indy Lights season.
“The track has a nice flow to it. It’s actually much more fun in an IndyCar. I look forward to racing here in a few weeks.”
The INDYCAR Grand Prix at the IMS road course takes place on May 11.
