INDYCAR announced today that a brand new race – the Freedom 250 Grand Prix – will take place in Washington D.C. this August as part of the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations.
The event – which will mark the first motor race in history to take place in the U.S. capital – is scheduled for August 21-23. A street course layout is currently being devised for the occasion.
The addition of D.C. expands the 2026 INDYCAR calendar to 18 races, up from the original tally of 17. It will also set up a ferocious run-in to the championship with five consecutive weekends of racing to round out the campaign.
