Sonsio Grand Prix (USA)
Felix Rosenqvist ushers in the most eagerly anticipated month of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES campaign as all eyes turn to Indianapolis Motor Speedway, beginning with the Sonsio Grand Prix this weekend.
Staged at the road course version of IMS, Saturday’s race marks the start of Month of May activities, which culminate with the 108th running of the blue-riband Indianapolis 500 on May 26.
“I’m super excited to officially start the Month of May,” says Felix Rosenqvist. “Living here in Indy you can tell that people are ready to go. It’s a classic build-up for the 500. I felt pretty good after Barber, which was our first road course, so although I don’t totally know what to expect this weekend, I think if Barber was any indicator we should be in good shape.”
Rosenqvist boasts a strong record at the IMS road course, claiming his maiden INDYCAR pole at the track during his debut season in 2019. He repeated the feat in 2022, topping the qualifying charts once again, and has five top 10 finishes at the venue from ten starts.
Equally, the IMS road course has proved one of Meyer Shank Racing’s better hunting grounds in the past, the squad scoring marquee results at the track – coincidentally in Rosenqvist’s pole position years. The team pocketed its first INDYCAR podium at the track in 2019 and returned to the rostrum again in 2022.
“We have some good momentum from the last few weeks, so we just need to keep that going,” Felix Rosenqvist continues. “I like Indy GP; I had my first ever pole there back in 2019 and it’s a good track for me in general. I’m very excited and I really look forward to these next couple of weeks.”
Rosenqvist heads into the Sonsio Grand Prix, round four of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, holding fifth in the overall drivers’ standings following a strong start to his first season with Meyer Shank Racing. The Swedish driver has led the squad to its first-ever INDYCAR pole and is the first driver in team history to start the year with three consecutive top five qualifying results.
Rosenqvist is one of just five drivers to have finished in the top 10 in each of the three races staged so far this season.
The Sonsio Grand Prix features a compressed Friday-Saturday schedule, with a busy first day of action featuring two practice sessions and qualifying. The 85-lap race takes place on Saturday afternoon local time.
