Felix Rosenqvist recovered from dead last on the opening lap to clinch his fourth consecutive top ten finish for Meyer Shank Racing in this weekend’s Sonsio Grand Prix, phasing in the Month of May in positive style.
Rosenqvist lived through a rollercoaster ride in Saturday’s fourth round of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, which played out at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. The Swede started tenth but was involved in a first-corner melee that saw him shoved off the track at the start, dropping him to 27th and last on the opening lap.
Producing a storming fightback over the rest of the 85-lap race, however, Rosenqvist managed to gradually pick his way back through the pack, ultimately vaulting himself back into P10 at the chequered flag.
The effort extends Rosenqvist’s unbroken run of top ten finishes to start out the 2024 campaign, and means he maintains fifth in the overall standings as the season shifts into next gear.
“That was a wild one,” says Felix Rosenqvist. “I basically got wrecked in the first corner and dropped to dead last. We decided to pit early to get rid of the blacks (primary tyres), and from there on we did the rest of the race on reds (alternate tyres).
“We had to save quite a lot of fuel to make it happen, but we managed to, and the pace was great. I would have loved to see where we’d ended up without that setback on the first lap – I think a podium was definitely realistic today. We now have four straight top tens, so it’s a good start to the year, and plenty to be happy about going into the next few weeks here in Indy.”
The NTT INDYCAR SERIES now shifts into Indianapolis 500 mode, commencing practice for the blue-riband oval event on Tuesday (May 14). Qualifying plays out next weekend, and the race itself takes place on May 26.
