NTT INDYCAR SERIES
RD. 12 – IOWA 300 (USA)
Felix Rosenqvist finished a rain-delayed Iowa 300 IndyCar event in 14th place, overcoming an early clash that forced him to pit for repairs at the short oval.
The Saturday night race was delayed by several hours after a heavy downpour hit Iowa Speedway before the start, necessitating the use of jet blowers as organisers set about ridding the track from water.
When the race finally did get underway, Rosenqvist found himself in some early trouble on lap 19 of 300, making contact with Sage Karam – who spun on his own in front – and sustaining a flat tyre.
Once back on track after pitting for repairs, Rosenqvist ran 19th when the race was stopped on lap 54 as the rain returned.
It eventually restarted with 246 laps left to run, with Rosenqvist completing the race without further incident to finish 14th aboard his Chip Ganassi Racing PNC Bank car.
Josef Newgarden won ahead of Scott Dixon, with James Hinchcliffe completing the podium.
“It was a long race, 300 laps, but quite some fun and a good experience to do the first short oval,” says Felix Rosenqvist. “Even though we didn’t really have the car underneath us today, I was still able to learn a lot. We got a bit unlucky in the beginning when Sage (Karam) spun right in front of me; I hit him, got a puncture and damaged the front wing. That put us a lap down and we then had to fight against that throughout the rest of the race. We weren’t really there to do any heroics in the end, but we still picked up some positions in the closing stages. A long day, but equally a good experience.”
The NTT IndyCar Series now continues its high-paced schedule with a third consecutive weekend of racing on July 26-28, setting camp at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
Felix Rosenqvist continues to lead the IndyCar rookie standings.
