Felix Rosenqvist escaped largely unscathed in a race-ending accident that saw a competing car send him crashing into the barriers in the closing stages of Sunday’s Detroit Grand Prix.
The accident occurred on lap 83 of 100 when Britain’s Louis Foster suffered a suspension failure and careered into the back of Rosenqvist at Turn 3, causing the #60 Meyer Shank Racing Honda to make heavy contact with the outside barriers.
Rosenqvist was swiftly attended to by the INDYCAR safety and medical team following the accident, and was subsequently cleared at the medical centre without serious injuries.
“I’m a bit bruised and have some pain in my right knee, but apart from that, I’m feeling all OK,” says Felix Rosenqvist. “It was a big hit, so we’ll monitor it throughout next week just out of precaution, but there are no fractures or anything like that. It’s a shame the race ended that way; I think we were on course for another top ten result today.”
Rosenqvist’s wild day in Detroit had previously included another scare when he spun into the wall early on and was forced to pit for repairs. Despite that, he bounced back to briefly lead the race as he tried to recover from 14th on the grid, having encountered untimely traffic in the first segment of Saturday’s qualifying session.
Rosenqvist, who topped Sunday’s warm-up session a few hours before the start, had just completed his final pit stop and was running 13th when the race-ending incident happened.
Despite his first DNF of the campaign, Rosenqvist still clings on to the top five in the overall NTT INDYCAR SERIES standings after seven races.
The championship resumes on June 14-15 with the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at World Wide Technology Raceway.
