Felix racked up his first laps of the new year on a productive day of private IndyCar testing at Florida\u2019s Sebring International Raceway on Tuesday.<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n

One of 11 drivers on site, Felix and Chip Ganassi Racing were joined by Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, Andretti Autosport, Rahal Letterman Lanigan, Ed Carpenter Racing and Dale Coyne Racing out on track.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlike the other teams, Ganassi opted to field just a single car in this test, with Felix in charge of driving duties as he completed 142 tours of the airfield circuit.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been a good day, lots of work done,\u201d says Felix<\/strong>. \u201cMore than anything, I\u2019m positively surprised at my fitness level. Normally you\u2019re pretty dead at the end of the first day of pre-season testing, but I actually feel very strong. I could do another day tomorrow without issue. I have stepped up my training this winter ahead of IndyCar \u2013 these cars are tough to drive \u2013 and it\u2019s nice to see that having an effect already.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The day at Sebring \u2013 which Felix visited for the first time \u2013 revolved around general set-up work and other baseline preparations ahead of the imminent season. Felix wound up fifth fastest in the morning and seventh in the afternoon, pleased with his day\u2019s work.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe stuck to our programme and did what we were supposed to do,\u201d Felix continues<\/strong>. \u201cI think I was two or three tenths off the fastest time on our type of tyres, so that was promising at this point \u2013 but it\u2019s really just testing and we can\u2019t read too much into anything.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnyway, the morning session went really well and in the afternoon we experimented a bit more with the car, sitting out the final half hour when the track was at its best. We have found some interesting directions and overall I think it\u2019s been a good start to the year.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The next private test is planned for February 8 at Laguna Seca, which has not hosted IndyCar running for 14 years but will stage the 2019 finale come September.<\/span><\/p>\n

The entire field will then come together for the first time during an official test at Austin\u2019s Circuit of The Americas on February 12-13.<\/span><\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
