\"Imola-aerial\"<\/a>Following almost two months on the sidelines, the FIA Formula 3 European Championship returns to the limelight next week as the 2014 campaign reaches an intense climax.<\/p>\n

The latest round of the highly-rated championship,\u00a0which provides one of the world’s strongest platforms for up-and-coming\u00a0single-seater talents, took place at the N\u00fcrburgring on August 15-17 – meaning Felix and his fellow rivals have\u00a0conducted no or little running over the past seven weeks.<\/p>\n

Starting on Tuesday, however, the F3 fraternity can look forward to a much\u00a0more crammed\u00a0schedule of racing, as the field heads to the Italian circuit of Imola for two days of official testing\u00a0(staged on October 7-8). Tuesday’s\u00a0sessions will\u00a0hand Felix his first-ever\u00a0acquaintance with the legendary venue, which is situated on the picturesque outskirts of Bologna and which\u00a0hosted the Formula 1 San\u00a0Marino Grand Prix up until 2006.<\/p>\n

While Imola (formally known as\u00a0“Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari”) are\u00a0treasured grounds for any\u00a0motor racing enthusiast,\u00a0its history is also regretfully clouded in tragedy.\u00a0During the\u00a01994 San Marino GP, it\u00a0claimed the lives of\u00a0Roland\u00a0Ratzenberger\u00a0and Ayrton Senna on\u00a0one terrible weekend,\u00a0the aftershock of which went on to righfully change the shape of the sport for years to come. With safety\u00a0matters being put at an immediate\u00a0premium, the international motor racing community swore never to let\u00a0similar disaster strike again.<\/p>\n

Among the measures implemented were substantial alterations to the most critical sections of the\u00a0Imola circuit,\u00a0including the\u00a0construction of a chicane\u00a0at the previously fearsome Tamburello bend –\u00a0the scene of Senna’s accident in which the Brazilian hit the wall at more than 200 km\/h. To this day, Senna remains the\u00a0last\u00a0Formula 1 driver fatality.<\/p>\n

Following on from the two test days on Tuesday and Wednesday,\u00a0the FIA Formula 3 European Championship will remain set\u00a0at\u00a0Imola, where the\u00a0penultimate round of the season will then take place\u00a0next weekend (10-12 October). Once the chequered flag has fallen in Italy, the field will travel straight to Germany for the traditional Hockenheim\u00a0finale a week later.<\/p>\n
