\"1400-2\"<\/a>Felix wrapped up preparations for the\u00a02014 FIA Formula 3 European Championship by spearheading the Mercedes charge as pre-season testing came to a close at the Red Bull Ring on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The second and last day of\u00a0running in the Styrian Alps\u00a0marked\u00a0the final opportunity for teams and\u00a0drivers to fine-tune their cars\u00a0ahead of the\u00a0imminent campaign, with Felix carrying out continued gearbox and engine electronics work.<\/p>\n

Having completed a comprehensive programme in Budapest last weekend, M\u00fccke Motorsport\u00a0opted for a more restricted approach\u00a0across the final two days of testing\u00a0in an\u00a0effort to limit excessive\u00a0engine\u00a0mileage.<\/p>\n

As a result, Felix completed just 70 laps during the\u00a0course of the day, and didn’t run at all when the fastest times were set in the final hour. Pace-setter Max Verstappen (Van Amersfoort Racing), for reference, clocked up 133 laps to head the timesheets on a 1m23.690s best, while\u00a0Felix\u00a0wound up\u00a0seventh overall on a 1m24.525s –\u00a0slotting in behind six Volkswagen-powered cars\u00a0as the\u00a0top Mercedes representative.<\/p>\n

The FIA Formula 3 European Championship fraternity now turns its attention towards British Grand Prix venue\u00a0Silverstone, where the opening round of\u00a0the season takes place next weekend\u00a0(April 18-20).<\/p>\n

\u00a0FELIX’S VIEW: <\/strong><\/p>\n

“We’ve had two largely positive tests over the last week, and we’re happy with the programme we’ve managed to complete. We decided to keep running at a minimum today, sticking to the plan we agreed\u00a0in Budapest, and\u00a0continued to work primarily on\u00a0the gearbox. There are still some issues to address;\u00a0the\u00a0downshifting is\u00a0not as\u00a0consistent as I would like,\u00a0which\u00a0in turn\u00a0makes the car very sensitive under braking. We’re confident it will be all fine for Silverstone, however, and I think we have every reason to be optimistic going into the first\u00a0race.<\/p>\n

“Testing is always testing, and – as far as outright lap times are concerned – it’s impossible to draw any conclusions on relative performance. Here, for example, you can easily gain half a second in the first sector alone by cutting the kerb at the exit of Turn 1 – there’s no policing of that in testing.<\/p>\n

“Combined with different run plans, fuel loads and tyre situations, it’s difficult to judge where we are compared to our main rivals, but\u00a0my ambition for the season ahead obviously remains unchanged and\u00a0I’m now fully focussed on\u00a0doing the best job possible at Silverstone.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
