{"id":2388,"date":"2014-08-03T11:59:45","date_gmt":"2014-08-03T09:59:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/b106543.web05.cust.bluerange.se\/?p=2388"},"modified":"2014-08-03T14:21:10","modified_gmt":"2014-08-03T12:21:10","slug":"red-bull-ring-race-2-felix-retires-after-ocon-clash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/felixracing.se\/en\/red-bull-ring-race-2-felix-retires-after-ocon-clash\/","title":{"rendered":"Red Bull Ring Race 2: Felix retires after Ocon clash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2386\" alt=\"R2\" src=\"https:\/\/b106543.web05.cust.bluerange.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/R2-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/felixracing.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/R2-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/felixracing.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/R2-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/felixracing.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/R2.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Felix was forced to retire from the second FIA Formula 3 European Championship race of the weekend in Austria, having sustained damage to his M\u00fccke Motorsport machine in a clash with championship leader Esteban Ocon.<\/p>\n<p>From fifth on the grid, Felix did not get the best of starts and dropped behind Ocon (who had been starting sixth), only to produce an emphatic move on the Frenchman at the Remus hairpin just seconds later, grabbing fourth after simultaneously passing team-mate Lucas Auer.<\/p>\n<p>After running wide at the exit of Turn 1 a few laps later, however, Felix\u00a0was demoted by\u00a0Ocon once more,\u00a0although he then stayed right on the gearbox of\u00a0the Lotus junior until a second safety car appeared as marshals attended to a stricken Dennis van de Laar (the first intervention having come after Jordan King retired with broken suspension).<\/p>\n<p>At the restart, Felix got into Ocon&#8217;s slipstream along the start\/finish straight, dragging alongside the Prema Powerteam man in\u00a0a battle over fourth as they entered the braking zone for Turn 1. Ocon then appeared to move over on Felix, who was on the outside, with the resulting contact sending Ocon spinning into the run-off area and Felix into retirement with suspension damage.<\/p>\n<p>The collision marks the second time this year that the duo has clashed, coming on the back of <a title=\"Felix in race-ending clash after victory dispute\" href=\"https:\/\/b106543.web05.cust.bluerange.se\/felix-in-race-ending-clash\/?lang=en\"><strong>their tangle while disputing the lead at Pau earlier in the season<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The race then featured a third safety car situation after Spike Goddard made contact with Roy Nissany under braking for Remus, sending the Australian T-boning the innocent Sandro Zeller\u00a0in an incident reminiscent to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7_rZbnPbYnI\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Nick Heidfeld\/Takuma Sato crash of the 2002 Austrian Grand Prix<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The race was won by Antonio Fuoco, who inherited the win after fellow Italian Antonio Giovinazzi &#8211; who crossed the line first &#8211;\u00a0was handed a penalty for a faulty safety car restart\u00a0process in the closing\u00a0stages.<\/p>\n<p>Race\u00a03, the\u00a0final event of this weekend, takes place late this afternoon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE<\/strong>: <em>Following the race, Ocon picked up a penalty for the clash with Felix, after the stewards\u00a0issued\u00a0the Frenchman with a ten-place grid demotion for Race 3 after\u00a0judging him to\u00a0have\u00a0caused the\u00a0situation by changing his line under braking.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>FELIX:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Such a shame &#8211; I was feeling really strong in this race and a podium was within reach. This is the second time I\u00a0and\u00a0Esteban have clashed this year, and\u00a0he again\u00a0changed his line under braking &#8211; it was all very similar to what happened at Pau. I was quicker than him and got a good run after the restart, and this retirement really hurts. The car felt strong and I think we were set for a good result. There&#8217;s not much to do, however, and hopefully we can bring the weekend to a more positive close in the final race this afternoon, albeit from P8 on the
