{"id":2342,"date":"2014-08-02T12:10:58","date_gmt":"2014-08-02T10:10:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/b106543.web05.cust.bluerange.se\/?p=2342"},"modified":"2014-08-02T15:48:01","modified_gmt":"2014-08-02T13:48:01","slug":"felix-takes-fifth-in-feisty-race-1-drive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/felixracing.se\/en\/felix-takes-fifth-in-feisty-race-1-drive\/","title":{"rendered":"Felix takes fourth in feisty Race 1 drive (UPDATED)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2334\" alt=\"R1-article\" src=\"https:\/\/b106543.web05.cust.bluerange.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/R1-article-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/felixracing.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/R1-article-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/felixracing.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/R1-article-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/felixracing.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/R1-article.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Felix leapt from eighth on the grid to finish fifth in the opening race of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship weekend at the Red Bull Ring, having hauled himself into podium contention in the early stages of the 24-lap event in the Styrian countryside.<\/p>\n<p>In a race which featured no shortage of action, Felix moved all the way into third\u00a0thanks to an offensive\u00a0opening lap, aided by a high-profile clash between front row starters Esteban Ocon and Max Verstappen\u00a0at the first corner.<\/p>\n<p>Felix, having grabbed fourth on the run to Turn\u00a02,\u00a0then put on a move on third-placed Jake Dennis at Rauch Kurve, grabbing third from the Englishman\u00a0to complete a rapid rise on cold tyres.<\/p>\n<p>With Tom Blomqvist and Antonio Giovinazzi now first and second, Felix\u00a0found himself sandwiched between a trio of Carlin cars.<\/p>\n<p>As the race settled in, Felix\u00a0could not quite match the pace of the Carlin troika, and\u00a0was forced into defensive mode\u00a0as Dennis threatened from behind. The duel came to a head at the midway stages, when Felix was forced to run wide on the exit of the Remus hairpin to avoid a collision with the Briton, allowing the recovering Verstappen through to grab third. Felix momentarily dropped behind Dennis as well, but managed to re-claim the position with another cut-over manoeuvre at Rauch.<\/p>\n<p>Felix eventually had to let Dennis through &#8211; the pace of the Carlin\u00a0machine\u00a0becoming unbearable to resist in\u00a0the closing stages &#8211;\u00a0and soon came under further pressure from Prema\u00a0Powerteam&#8217;s Antonio Fuoco. A couple of mistakes saw the Italian fall into the clutches of the chasing Gustavo Menezes, however, handing Felix some breathing space as his rivals started battling behind him.<\/p>\n<p>Felix held on to fifth across the line*, feeling he had made the most of the opportunity handed to him. M\u00fccke Motorsport colleagues Lucas Auer and Roy Nissany finished 10th and 11th respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Next up this weekend is Qualifying 2, which sets up the grid for Sunday&#8217;s second and third races.<\/p>\n<p><strong>*UPDATE:<\/strong> <em>Following the race, Verstappen was issued with a five-second time penalty after the stewards adjudged him to have completed an illegal pass on Fuoco as he recovered from his lap one clash. The decision dropped Verstappen to fifth, with Felix promoted to fourth.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>FELIX:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m happy with my performance in this race; fifth was probably the most we could have hoped for today. I tried every trick in the book to keep Dennis behind, but it was getting increasingly more difficult as the race progressed and I eventually had to let him go. We beat all Prema cars today, and a\u00a0couple of the Carlin guys as well, and considering our current level of performance, I think we should be quite pleased with that. I&#8217;m now fully focussed\u00a0on qualifying this afternoon, and the target is to start\u00a0a bit further up the grid\u00a0tomorrow than we did today.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>RESULTS
